The Shops Act of 1934 which came into operation on 31st
December, 1934, regulates the number of hours which young
persons under the age of 18 years may be employed, and
provides generally for the health and comfort of the workers.
The Shops Act, 1936, brings lending libraries, with certain
exceptions within the purview of the Shops Acts.
The Retail Meat Dealers (Sunday Closing) Act, 1936,
requires that butchers' shops shall be closcd on Sundays, with
certain exceptions with regard to the selling of kosher meat.
The Shops (Sunday Trading Restrictions) Act, 1936,
requires that butchers' shops shall be closed on Sundays, with
certain exceptions with regard to the selling of kosher meat.
The Shops (Sunday Trading Restrictions) Act, 1936,
restricts the opening of shops and trading on Sunday. The
Act contains provisions for granting exemption orders and
special provisions regarding the Jewish Sabbath. Where
assistants are employed on Sundays, the Act provides for
holidays on week-days in lieu thereof.
The Young Persons Act, 1938, substantially limited the
number of working hours for young persons as from 1st January,
1940, to 48 hours a week if they are between the ages
of 16 and 18, and to 44 hours a week if they are under 16.
No young person under the age of 16, may in any circumstances
be employed overtime.
A total of 29 shops were inspected by the Sanitary
Inspectors during the year, the results of such inspections
being duly recorded on inspection cards. Regarding hours of
closing, it was necessary to issue 24 warnings to shop-keeners.

Non-compliance with Section 10 of the Shops Act, 1934, relating to health and comfort was located in the following instances, and Notices were consequently served to effect the necessary improvement:—

Such Notices had all been complied with by the end of
the year.

No action has been taken during the year under Section
46 Public Health Act, 1936, in respect to sanitary accommodation
at offices within the Borough. In on case has it been
located that insufficient sanitary conveniences exist at such
premises.
