Scabies.
There was an increase in the number of school children suffering
from Scabies, as many as 622 cases attending the Health Centres
for treatment during the year. In addition 180 pre-school children
were treated and 372 cases were referred by General Practitioners
and Factory Medical Officers, making a total of 1,174 cases treatedduring
the year.
Treatment by benzyl benzoate was continued as this has been
found to be the most satisfactory method.
Owing to the increase in the number of cases of Scabies it was
decided to inspect all the school children and the Assistant Medical
Officers visited all schools in turn for this purpose. As a result
15,610 children were inspected and 93 were excluded with Scabies
and subsequently treated. Every case of scabies was followed up
in order to discover other persons suffering from the disease and
to encourage their attending the Health Centres for treatment.
The following table shows how the number of cases of scabies
in school children has been increasing-since before the war :—
