CO-ORDINATION WITH MEDICAL PRACTITIONERS. AND OTHER BRANCHES OF THE HEAD DEPT.
During the year 206 cases of suspected Tuberculosis were referred by
private medical practitioners; 41 were diagnosed as suffering from
Tuberculosis and were subsequently notified. In addition, 16 children
were referred by the School Medical Service, and 25 cases from the
Maternity and Child Welfare section of the Public Health Department. 87%
of all notified cases were examined at the Clinic or were seen at the
request of the medical attendant it the patient's home, as compared with
87% in 1939 83.6% in 1938 87% in 1937, and 78.3% in 1936.
The number of reports sent in by Insurance medical practitioners on
their domiciliary cases (From G.P.36) was 346.
EXAMINATION OF SPUTUM

The results of examinations made in 1940 are as follows : -

For each 100 new cases and contacts examined at the Clinic, 136
specimens of sputum were examined.
1940 shows a decrease in the number of examinations of sputa made
for General Practitioners. It is difficult to under stand why this simple
test is not always made in any doubtful chest condition.
X-RAY WORK.
694 X-ray examinations were made during the year, a decrease of
35 under 1939. This is equivalent to 86.8 for every 100 new cases
and contacts seen, and compares with a rate of 91.1 in 1939. 74.7
1938, 68.4 in 1937 and 56.3 in 1936. In addition, a certain number
of cases who have already been examined at various Hospitals are
referred to the Clinic.
During the year the x-ray examinations were carried out at May day
Hospital
EXTRA NOURISHMENT.
Provision of special nourishment in the form of milk was granted
to.. 95 selected cases for varying periods during the year, and 42 cases
were in receipt of extra nourishment at the end of the year .
