Cost of the School Medical Sorvico.
The gross cost of tho nodical, dental and nursing services was £11,842; fron
this an incor.io of £5-17 should be deducted, making a nett cost of £14,295. The
rateable Ttrilue of the Borough in 1940 was £2,483,476. The Government grant is
44.15 per cent, of the expenditure, hence the actual cost to the rates was £7984,
i.e. a rate of 0.84 pence. The figures do not include £300. for Medical Inspection
(Higher Education) and for Blind Persons £317 nett.
Cost of Special Schools
Schools maintained by the Council, £8060; Contributions to schools under other
authorities, £5028, Loans charges, £1565, Other expenses (travelling ctc.) £26.
Income from parents' contributions and otter receipts £532, giving an actual cost of
£14,147 of vihicli £7,902 was payablo out of local rates, giving a rate of 0.83 ponce.
Cost of Milk and Meals
Milk and meals cost £1276. 13. 4; wages, fuel, printing etc., £619. 0. 6$ income
from parents' contributions, £32. 16. 2j giving an actual cost of £1,862. 17. 8.
There has been a slight increase in the cost of the actual medical services
rendered in the Public Elementary Schools from 0.67 in 1939 to 0.84 of a penny
rate in 1940. The cost of maintenance in special schools has decreased from a rate
of 0.87 to 0.83 pence. The cost of milk and meals has decreased by £1,370. 9. 3.

Medical Inspection in Schools.
total of 3969 children were examined as compared with 4908 in 1939, and
2840 parents attended the examinations. The percentage attendance of parents
in the Entrants' group was for boys 82.7 per cent and girls 83,5 per cent; in the
Intermediate Group, boys 77.5 per cent, girls 76.8 per cent; and in the Leavers'
group boys 36.3 per cent, girls 61.6 per cent. 4740 re-inspections were made
as against 17,109 in 1939 and 12,039 in 1938.
The total percentage of parents attending was 71.6, as against 73,3 last
year.
