BIRTHS.
One thousand, two hundred and forty-four live births were
registered during the year, as against one thousand, three hundred
and seventy during 1955.
The birth rate for the year is 14.2 which is slightly lower than
that of the previous year. The adjusted rate for comparison
purposes is 13.8. The rate for England and Wales as a whole is
15.7.
The illegitimate birth rate was 34.54 per 1,000 live and still
births. There were forty-four live illegitimate births registered,
seventeen being males and twenty-seven females.
Thirty stillbirths were registered, giving a rate of 0.34 per
1,000 total population, and 23.5 per 1,000 live and still births.
Fourteen of the stillbirths were males and sixteen females.
DEATHS.
There were 675 deaths appertaining to the Urban District
and registered during the year, giving a death rate of 7.7 per 1,000
total population. The adjusted rate for comparison purposes
is 10.2. The rate for England and Wales as a whole is 11.7
Of the deaths registered, 362 were males and 313 females.
The following is an analysis of the ages at death:—
30 were under 1 year of age.
5 were 1 and under 5 years of age.
5 were 5 and under 15 years of age.
4 were 15 and under 25 years of age.
27 were 25 and under 45 years of age.
167 were 45 and under 65 years of age.
159 were 65 and under 75 years of age.
278 were 75 years of age and over.
