BACTERIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL EXAMINATION OF MILK.
SAMPLES TAKEN AT RAILWAY STATIONS.
As has been customary for some years past, a series of samples of milk arriving in the
City of London from the country was collected at Liverpool Street Station in September,
and submitted to Sir Frederick Andrewes, K.B.E., the City Bacteriologist, for bacteriological
examination and investigation as to the presence of dirt. A duplicate of each sample was
submitted to Mr. A. J. C. Lickorish, F.I.C., the Public Analyst for the City of London, for
chemical examination. Every precaution was taken during collection of the samples to
ensure that they were not contaminated during the process.
•Forty-two samples were collected, and these were sent from different farms situated
in the following counties :—
Norfolk 25 Essex 5
Suffolk 10 Cambridge 2
The following is a copy of the report which has been submitted by the Bacteriologist
on the results of his examination :—
The specimens were placed in conical vessels overnight in a refrigerator, and examined
for microscopic dirt. A mixture of deposit and surface cream was then injected into guinea-pigs.
Milks producing no animal lesions :—
The following specimens produced no animal lesions, the guinea-pigs, killed after five weeks, being found healthy.
