* "Viscount Cross in the year 1879 forbade the practice of cremation there (Woking) under the threat of passing an Act to make it
"illegal .... But in 1884 appeared the well-known judgment of Mr. Justice Stephen, which, in the case of a child's body having been
"burned by its father contrary to the order of the coroner, determined cremation to be a legal act, provided no nuisance be caused there"by
to others."—Extract from speech made by the late Sir Henry Thompson at the opening of Golder's Green Crematorium, 22nd Nov"ember,
1902. Vide "Transactions of Cremation Society of England, 1903." p. 31.
† Closed for reconstruction from August, 1913, to July, 1914.
REMOVAL OF HUMAN REMAINS.
CHURCH OF St. BENET FINK.
In the course of excavations in connection with building operations on the site
of St. Benet Fink Church, Threadneedle Street, a quantity of human remains were
unearthed. These remains were stored as disinterred in a shed specially erected on
the site for the purpose. Two cases, each containing a lead coffin, and one case
containing a quantity of loose bones were ultimately removed to Ilford Cemetery
for interment with others which have been in the past removed from this site.
EXHUMATION AND REINTERMENT OF BODIES AT THE
CITY OF LONDON CEMETERY.
During the year the bodies of 8 persons buried at the City of London Cemetery
at Ilford have been exhumed and subsequently re-interred in other graves in the
same Cemetery. In accordance with the terms of the licenses issued by the
Home Secretary in respect of these cases, the work of removal and re-interment
was carried out in the early morning under the supervision of your Medical Officer
of Health.
