The above totals do not include visitors or other persons entering the City for
business reasons; they refer to those actually engaged in work in the City. The
information is of considerable value in many connections, but particularly as regards
housing, transport, and public health matters. The figures being available
for the whole county will assist in indicating to some extent the localities in which
increased housing accommodation is necessary, or at any rate desirable, and the
directions in which facilities for enabling persons to reach their work can be
reviewed. Accurate knowledge with reference to the daily influx of population
gives some indication of the public health problems in the City to-day
compared with those when an essentially residential population was
probably greater than the daily influx of workers. The conditions under which
this population works, the methods of feeding, the removal of contaminations
from the street and atmosphere generally, the ease and facilities of transportation
all become emphasized with such considerable density during the
