The birth rate in these Dwellings reached a maximum of 46.9 per 1,000 in 1896,
and has since been falling, as shown by the following figures:—

The Baths provided for the use of the tenants of these Buildings, which were
opened in May, 1904, continue to be extensively used, the number of persons bathing
during 1915 being 10,795, of whom 4,259 were males and 5,536 were females.
DISINFECTION, &c., AT CITY MORTUARY.
361,879 articles of bedding, clothing, furniture, &c., were received at Golden Lane
and disinfected. Of these 347,349 were disinfected at the request of City firms
engaged in exporting second.hand clothing to South Africa, where the authorities
will not allow such articles to enter the country unless accompanied by a certificate
duly signed by a medical officer of health, vouching for the proper disinfection
of each consignment. In all, 1,185 certificates were issued during the year.
10,656 articles were from premises in the City where infectious disease had occurred, and
he remainder, 3,874, were articles of clothing disinfected at the request of the
Management of the Belgian War Refugees Home, Manchester Hotel.
199 bodies were received at the Mortuary pending interment, and 85 post.mortem
examinations were made. 176 inquests were held on bodies, and 9 inquests on
fires.
