It will be seen from the preceding table that during the year 1909, compared with the
decennium 1891-1900, there has been a saving of 24,902 lives, representing a gain to the community
of 1,080,784 years of " life-capital."

The following table shows the diminution or excess in the number of deaths from certain
diseases and groups of diseases during the year 1909, compared with the mean of the annual deaths
in the preceding 10 years, corrected for increase of population.
