It will be noted that the death-rate per 1,000 births in 1908 is the lowest recorded in the table.
An account of puerperal fever occurring in the practice of midwives will be found on reference
to the administration of the Midwives Act, 1902, see pp. 84, et seq.
Influenza, Bronchitis and Pneumonia.
The deaths attributed to influenza,"which in 1907 numbered 967 (52 weeks), rose to 1,350 in 1908
(53 weeks). The deaths from bronchitis numbered 5,342 in 1908, as compared with 6,010 in 1907. In
1908 there were 6,751 deaths attributed to pneumonia, a decrease of 787 on the number occurring from
the same cause in 1907.
