Note: The 142 Other Nationalities in Ward 7 are mainly French (52):

The above figures were not obtained by direct enquiry. The enumerators were
instructed not to put a definite question as to nationality, but when given a
foreign sounding name, to hazard a guess to the person they were interviewing
and enter on their investigation report form any information they thereby elicited
as to the nationality of persons in the house.
In addition, it should be realised that only the head of a family has been
included as a non-British person in compiling these figures The other members
of the family are not included in the total number of other nationals given
For these reasons the figures in the table must be regarded as an understatement
of the actual position.
