It will be seen from the foregoing tables that the incidence of and deaths
from pulmonary tuberculosis have been greatest in the age periods 15 to 55,
but in the case of other forms of tuberculosis in the age periods 0 to 15.
This is an expression of the fact that tuberculosis of the lungs is commonest
in adults, and tuberculosis of other parts of the body (such as of glands,
meninges, joints, and abdominal tuberculosis) commonest in children.
The males have suffered all round from tuberculosis to a greater extent than
the females. This is found in the aggregate by the Registrar-General to he
the case in all urban communities, but hardly at all in purely rural districts.
The excessive mortality in man is evidently, then, a product of urbanisation,
and, especially as it is not seen in childhood, is probably due to the difference
between the industrial life of men and the domestic life of women. The
St. Pancras notifications also show an excess of males.
The great excess of notifications of non-pulmonary tuberculosis in children
under 15 amongst males (105) over that amongst females (50) is probably
accidental; there is no excess in the corresponding figures for deaths.

The deaths from and primary notifications of tuberculosis are classified in the following table according to the part of the body affected ;—
