VITAL STATISTICS
Population
The overall civilian population at the middle of the year was estimated
by the Registrar-General to be 348,450, and all the rates
used in this Report are based on this figure.
Table I below shows the mid-1963 estimate of population for the
Parliamentary Divisions of the Borough, based on the overall figure,
and also shows the more detailed ward figures of the 1961 Census.
In Table 1(a) a comparison is made of the population in five-yearly age groups and sexes for the two census years, 1951 and 1961.

Births
The total number of births belonging to the Borough registered
during 1963 was 6,402, consisting of 3,314 males and 3,088 females.
The number for 1962 was 6,312.
The crude birth-rate was 18.3 per 1,000 persons living compared
with 18.1 for 1962. The adjusted rate works out at 17.5 after taking
into account the area comparability factor supplied by the RegistrarGeneral.
The birth-rate for England and Wales as a whole was 18.2
and for London 20.1.
Seven hundred and eighty-five illegitimate births took place in the
Borough compared with 725 in 1962.
