Mr. Benjamin Weir, Chairman of the late Libraries
Commissioners, was nominated at the Borough Council
for a seat on the Divisional Committee, but on account
of his great age and increasing infirmities he was
reluctantly obliged to decline the nomination. The
Committee desire to place upon record their great appreciation
of the valuable services rendered by Mr. Weir,
both as Hon. Treasurer (from 1890 to 1900) and as
Chairman of the late Commissioners, and the expression
of their regret at the loss which the Libraries have
sustained by his retirement from this branch of his
numerous public duties.

Number of Books issued. The following Table gives the number of issued in the different classes of literature at the two libraries during the past year:—

Compared with the corresponding period of last
year, these statistics show an increased demand at the
Central Library for books in all classes except the
Juvenile Department ; while, at the Branch Institution,
the increase has been restricted to classes D, E, F, G,
and H.
