which the annual average number of births bore to the
annual average number of persons living during the preceding
ten years. Calculated from this proportion the
mean population of 1887 was 35,144, giving a birth-rate
of 38.07, a death-rate of 15.76, and a rate of natural increase
of 22.31 per 1,000.
