Comparing the principal causes of death with those of 1908,
the chief gains and losses are shewn in the following tables.
Of those diseases which have caused an increased mortality,
the chief are diseases of the respiratory organs, Bronchitis, Pneumonia,
Emphysema and Asthma having caused 37 more deaths
than in 1908. No doubt the cold wet weather of the past twelve
months has been responsible for much of the increased mortality
from these causes.
From Phthisis and other forms of tuberculosis 14 more deaths
are attributed than in the previous year.
The chief diseases from which there is a decreased death roll
included Influenza, with 11 fewer victims, and Cancer, with 9
fewer deaths, compared with 1908.
There is a large drop in the number of deaths registered as
due to Alcoholism, less than half the number being recorded in
1909 as compared with 1908 (9 and 19 respectively).
