Births. —The number of births recorded during 1908 was
1,485. This is a decrease of 39 as compared with the number of
births recorded in 1907.
Twenty-five of the births were illegitimate.
Ten of the births occurred in the Edmonton Workhouse, one
in the City of London Lying-in-Hospital and two at other Institutions.
The birth-rate for the year was 16.3, the lowest ever recorded
in Hornsey. For the last 25 years there has been an almost continuous
annual decline in the birth-rate.

The number of births and the birth-rate for each quarter of the year is as follows:—

In the first and third quarters the birth-rate was slightly
higher than during the corresponding quarters of 1907; it was
slightly lower in the fourth quarter and considerably lower during
the second quarter.
The birth-rate in the 76 Great Towns was 26.9. in the 142
smaller towns was 26.0, and in England and Wales less the 218
towns 26.2.
