Nearly half the infantile deaths occurred during the first
month of life, and of the first month, the first week is that in
which the highest mortality occurred. Of the 22 premature
births, most of the infants did not survive more than a few days,
and thus this cause is largely responsible for the heavy mortality
at this period.
