The following table gives the number of births during the year and the birth-rates for each ward of the Borough:—

Only in the West Hornsey Ward is the birth-rate higher than
the average birth-rate for the 76 Great Towns of England and
Wales. East Hornsey and North Haringey show a fairly high
birth-rate, but in the remaining wards, noticeably in Stroud Green,
the rate is extremely low.
There were 25 illegitimate births, forming 1.5 per cent. of
the total births, a very small percentage.
Eight of the 25 illegitimate births occurred in the Edmonton
Workhouse, but, when these are allocated to the wards in which
the mothers lived before entering the Workhouse, we get the following
distribution:—
