First Quarter. — The 674 cases notified were equal to an attack-rate
of 8.30 per 1,000, and contrasted with a decennial average of 401 cases, so
that the return showed an increase of 273.
Second Quarter.—There were 555 cases notified, or 155 more than the
average for the decennial period. They represent an attack-rate of 6.83 per
1,000 inhabitants.
Third Quarter.—768 cases were known, which is 255 above the average
that obtained in the corresponding quarters of the 10 years, 1904-1913. They
were equal to an annual attack-rate of 9.46 per 1,000 of the population.
Fourth Quarter.—950 cases were notified, as contrasted with a
decennial average of 645. There has, therefore, been an increase of 305
attacks. These cases represent an attack-rate of 11.70 per 1,000 o'f the
population.

Fatality from the Notifiable Infectious Diseases.
''Fatality" means the percentage proportion of deaths to attacks,
that is to say, if there were 100 attacks and five deaths, the fatality would
be 5 per cent.
It was noted in the last Annual Report that the fatality from all the
infectious diseases grouped together for the year was the lowest on record,
and it is satisfactory to find that it is only 0.3 per cent, higher in the year
under discussion, for the 112 deaths that occurred among the 2,947 cases were
equal to a rate of 3.8 per 1,000 of the inhabitants, which contrasts with an
average rate of 7.6 in the preceding 23 years, 1891-1913.
The subsequent statement, which was given last year, is now reprinted
because it contains important figures which show what a difference there is
between the fatality from these diseases when notification became compulsory
nnd in recent years.
