by the addition of separated milk to it, as it is to pick a pocket, and if there be
any difference of degree between the two offences, the toning of the new milk
is the more serious, because it is an article of diet on which the lives of
invalids and children depend for their nourishment.
It is sincerely to be hoped that before another year comes to an end
something will be done that will put a stop to the shameless adulterations that
are at present practised. The word " shameless " is used advisedly, because
at the present time in London there is a firm of milk purveyors who in the
early morning convey their new milk and their separated milk from the
railway stations in their carts, deposit them outside their doors, and then
actually mix them in the street tinder the very noses of the police.
In the following Table is given the number of samples analysed in each
year since 1901, and shows the number that were genuine and adulterated
and the percentage adulterated :—
