to occur annually without most strenuous efforts being made to prevent it.
FACTS ABOUT TUBERCULOSIS.
(1) In England and Wales in 1909, 10.5 per cent of the total mortality of
the country was due to Tuberculous Diseases.
(2) In England and Wales more than 500,000 persons died from Tuberculous
Diseases in the year 1909.
(3) In Islington during the ten years 1901-10, out of 50,275 persons who
died from all causes, 6,154, of 12.2 per cent., died from Tuberculous Diseases.
(4) In Islington (1901-10) every twelfth death was caused by Pulmonary
Tuberculosis (Consumption).
(5) In Islington (1901-10), out of 6,154 persons who died from Tuberculous
Diseases, 4,351, or 70.7 per cent., were at the wage-earning period of life.
(6) In Islington (1901-10), nearly every third death at the wage-earning
period of life was caused by Tuberculous Diseases.
(7) In Islington (1901-10), more than every fourth death at the wage-earning
period of life was caused by Pulmonary Phthisis (Consumption).
(8) In Islington (1901-10), two out of every five deaths between 25 and 35
years of age were caused by Tuberculosis.
(9) In Islington (1901-10), out of the 6,154 deaths from Tuberculous
Diseases, 4,658, or 75.7 per cent., were due to Pulmonary Phthisis.
(10) In Islington (1901-10), out of the 4,658 persons who died from
Pulmonary Phthisis, 3,686, or 711 per cent., were at the wage-earning period
of life.
(11) In Islington (1901-10), out of the 726 deaths from tuberculosis
Meningitis, 563, or 77.5 per cent., occurred among children under 5 years of age.
(12) In Islington (1901-10), out of 383 deaths from Abdominal Tuberculosis
(Tabes Mesenterica) 315, or 87 4 per cent., occurred among children under 5
years of age.
(13) In Islington out of the 615 persons who die annually from
all Tuberculous Diseases, 144, or 23.4 per cent., die in Public Institutions,
mainly the Workhouse Infirmary.
