INSPECTION AND SUPERVISION OF FOOD.
The supervision of food in a district with so many restaurants and
food shops, and containing the largest and most important wholesale
fruit market and clearance depot in the world, entails a great deal
more work than can appropriately be recorded in this report. It should
be noted that at Covent Garden Market about 600 wholesale merchants
deal with 1,000,000 tons of fruit and vegetables annually, a large proportion
of which comes from foreign countries. Imported fruit requires
careful supervision, and although, in the first place, it must pass the
officers of H.M. Customs and Port Sanitary Authority, yet these latter
rely on the officers of the Westminster Sanitary Authority to check and
to verify consignments concerning which provisional certificates have
been given.
No cases of food poisoning were reported during the year, nor were
there instances of seizure of unsound food exposed, etc., for sale for the
food of man.
Merchandise Marks Act, 1926, and The Agricultural Produce
(Grading and Marking) Act, 1928.
The administration of the above orders still demands a great amount
of time of the Food Inspectors and during the year the requirements of
the numerous orders and regulations have been carried out by the traders
concerned in a fairly satisfactory manner.
The system adopted is that all imported articles are dealt with under
the Merchandise Marks Act, 1926, and Home produce under the Agricultural
Produce (Grading and Marking) Act, 1926.
The following order under the Merchandise Marks Act came into force
during the year :—
No. 4 Order Raw Tomatoes.
Tomatoes, when exposed for sale, either wholesale or retail, if imported
into this country from any place outside the United Kingdom, must bear
an indication of origin.
The following regulations have been made under the Agricultural
Produce (Grading and Marking) Act, 1928, dealing with Home
Produce:—
Agricultural Produce (Grading and Marking) (Broccoli) Regulations, 1930.
„ „ „ „ „ (Strawberries) Regulations, 1930.
„ „ „ „ „ (Canned Fruits, Peas and Beans)
Regulations, 1930.
„ „ „ „ „ (Dressed Poultry) Regulations,
1930.
„ „ „ „ ,, (Cider) Regulations, 1930.
„ „ „ „ „ (Cherry) Regulations, 1930.
