Infectious Disease.—One case of diphtheria and 1 of erysipelas
occurred on premises in which milkshops were situated, and 3 persons
from an infected house were employed elsewhere in the milk trade.
Satisfactory arrangements were made in each instance, and no infection
of the milk resulted.
Cowsheds.—There is now only one cow-keeper, namely, at 13, Marsham
Street (licensed for 19 cows). These premises were visited 25 times during
the year.
There are no slaughter-houses or " offensive trades " carried on in
Westminster.
Butchers' Shops.—Complaint had to be made with reference to want
of cleanliness in the conduct of the business, improper storage of meat,
proximity of brine tubs to w.cs. and dustbins, and to the keeping of
fowls in an improper place.
Fish Shops.—Five owners were cautioned for want of care in the
conduct of their business. In one instance the fish was gutted and
cleaned in the front basement area and left there in pails, which became
covered with dust and refuse blown through the open grating over the
area. In another, fish was placed on the pavement in front of the shop
grouped round blocks of ice, in such a position as to render it liable to
contamination. Complaint had also to be made of a defective drain,
and of defective flooring.
Inspection of Food.
The food exposed for sale in shops and on stalls in the street markets
has been regularly inspected every day (including Sundays). The
following list shows the quantity of food condemned and destroyed
during the year. The bulk of it was submitted by the owners or
purchasers for the opinion of your officers:—
