Milkshops.—At the end of 1909, 350 names of persons selling milk
were upon the register. In 1910, 19 names were removed and 42
added, leaving 372 on the register at the end of the year; 29 of these
were registered in respect of new premises; 10 are street vendors having
no address in the City. Eight persons selling milk were given notice
to register, and complied. The Council refused to register in 2 instances
Six hundred and thirty.three visits were paid during the year, besides
those by the two Inspectors taking samples under the Food and Drugs
Act. Notices requiring improvement of existing conditions were
served in a number of instances; no proceedings had to be taken against
any milk seller on this account, but two were cautioned.
Infectious Disease.—Two cases of diphtheria occurred on premises in
which milkshops were situated, and one person from an infected house
was employed elsewhere in the milk trade. Satisfactory arrangements
were made in each instance, and no infection of the milk resulted.
Coivsheds.—There is now only one cow.keeper, namely, at 13, Marsbam
Street (licensed for 19 cows). These premises were visited 25 times during
the year. Considerable improvements have been effected during the year.
There are no slaughter.houses or "offensive trades" carried on in
Westminster.
Fried Fish Vendors, &c.—Several complaints have been dealt with
relating to the smell from these shops, and improved ventilation has
been brought about, in one case by the adoption of a stove whereby the
fumes from the frying are drawn into the stove and burned.
Inspection of Food.
The food exposed for sale in shops and on stalls in the street markets
has been regularly inspected every day (including Sundays). The
following list shows the quantity of food condemned and destroyed
during the year. The bulk of it was submitted by the owners or
purchasers for the opinion of your officers:—
