The amount of adulteration which was for some years on the increase
still shows indications of declining.
The average rate of adulteration for the London Boroughs in 1929
was 3.7 per cent., and for the whole of England and Wales 5.4 per cent.
The number of samples examined was at the rate of 5.0 per thousand
of the population, as compared with an average of 9.0 per thousand for
the London Boroughs and 3.5 per thousand for the whole of England
and Wales.
Milks.
426 samples of milk were examined, of which 17 samples, or 4.0 per
cent. were found to be adulterated.

The amount of milk adulteration has remained consistently low for some years as indicated by the following figures:—

Condensed Milks.
23 samples of Condensed Milk were examined, 2 of which failed to
reach the standard of composition.
Preservatives .
10 contraventions of the Preservatives Regulations were found.
2 samples of sausage containing sulphur dioxide and sold in an
unlabelled condition, 2 samples of sweets, and 6 samples of fresh meat
found to contain sulphur dioxide.
