The number of infants who died in the first four weeks of life was 60, and the causes of death were as follows:—

Investigations were made into the circumstances of the 75 stillbirths
and 60 neo-natal deaths, and it was found that 34 mothers
received no ante-natal care whatsoever, 26 paid an occasional visit
to their own doctors, 13 were supervised by a midwife, 45 attended
a Hospital clinic, and 17 had attended one of the four Ante-natal
clinics provided by the Borough Council.
