New Premises for Central Maternity and Child Welfare Clinic.
Plans have been prepared and approved by the Ministry of
Health for a Central Maternity and Child Welfare Clinic to be
erected on a portion of the Priory Site. The Priory Site, previously
the property of the late Lewisham Board of Guardians and transferred
to the London County Council under the provisions of the
Local Government Act, 1929, was purchased from the County
Council in 1929 for £3,750, the intention being to build thereon a
Central Maternity and Child Welfare Clinic and a Tuberculosis
Dispensary.
The Central Clinic is at present held at rooms belonging to and
adjoining the Catford Wesleyan Church, Rushey Green, but having
regard to the services to be provided and to the circumstances
generally, this arrangement, which was only adopted as a temporary
expedient, cannot be considered satisfactory.
The new Maternity and Child Welfare Clinic is designed on
the "Central Hall" principle, the hall being used as a place of
waiting and assembly, and to afford access to the various Clinics.
The main entrance and principal elevation will face the High Street,
Lewisham ; additional entrances will be provided at the side and rear
of the building, conveniently situated to the perambulator sheds.
It will be seen from the plans that ample facilities are available
for:—
(1) An ante-natal clinic, comprising a doctor's consulting room.
