Adulterated samples were:
1. Two samples of sausages were deficient in meat, one by
30 per cent. the other by 42 per cent.
2. One sample of sausages contained preservatives which were
not disclosed as required by the Preservative Regulations. This was
a very temporary lapse as when the formal sample was procured a
proper notice was found displayed.
It was not considered necessary to take proceedings in these
instances.
3. Three samples purchased as vinegar, were reported by the
Public Analyst as being "not malt vinegar." The vendor of two
of the samples (one informal and one formal) was prosecuted at
Clerkenwell Magistrates' Court, and fined 10s. on each of 2 summonses
plus 10s. costs. It was not possible to obtain a formal sample in the
other case as the vendor changed his description of the commodity
to comply with the legal ruling.
4. Following a complaint by a member of the public a formal
sample of a "Pastry Mix" was obtained. The Public Analyst
reported this as being rancid and at the court proceedings instituted
on the Committee's instructions, the case against the vendor was
proved but was dismissed on payment of 20s. costs.
Milk.
The change over in the methods of the milk trade referred to in
last year's report continues and at the end of the year only 3 traders
in the borough were bottling milk, and only 9 others were handling
loose milk. The register of dairies has been adjusted accordingly.
During the year the largest dairy in the borough at 116/120,
Goswell Road discontinued pasteurising and bottling milk, but remains
as a wholesale distributing depot, handling some 8,000 gallons of
milk daily.
