"B" categories refer to the Abbreviated List of 50 causes for Tabulation
of Mortality contained in the Manual of the International Statistical Classification
of Diseases, Injuries and Causes of Death, Volume 1.
It is not easy to make comparison of some of the details in the
table with those of previous years, because of the changed form—
to which reference is made in the introduction—in which the
information is presented.
It will be seen, however, that generally speaking the reduction
in the total number of deaths has been due to a general reduction
among those occurring from all causes, except cancer, and at all ages.
The deaths from cancer were almost identical in number with those
during 1949. Another unhappy feature which should be noted is
that more deaths occurred from cerebral haemorrhage and allied
causes in the age group 45-64, although there was a marked decline
in those recorded above 65.
