GENERAL
SANITARY ADMINISTRATION.
The gradual emergence of new branches of Public
Health activity does not in any way lessen the vital
importance of the original task—to provide a sanitary
environment for the people. This work is specially
difficult in a congested borough like Bethnal Green,
where the greater part of the housing is seriously below
modern standards, badly designed, dark, lacking in
proper lighting and ventilation, and much of it worn
out In structure. To deal with this situation by way
of Notices to remedy particular " sanitary defects " is
nothing more than continually giving " first aid " to a
patient who has long needed the surgeon's knife.
Unfortunately owing to illness among the staff, the
figures for 1931 show some falling off compared with
previous years.
