Two formal samples of ground caraway were deficient in volatile
oil. A cautionary letter was sent to the suppliers who had already
withdrawn the consignment from sale.
Five samples of jam, two formal and three informal, were deficient
in fruit content. A letter cautioning the manufacturers was sent and
further samples are being obtained.
Two informal samples of meat paste were deficient in meat content.
Later samples were satisfactory, and no further action was considered
necessary.
The percentages of samples reported by the Public Analyst to
be adulterated or otherwise unsatisfactory during the quinquennia 1921
to 1960 are given in the following table. The years 1960, 1961, 1962 and
1963 are shown separately.

Milk.
Seventy formal samples of milk were taken during the year.
Of the 70 samples, 18 were designated as "Channel Islands"
or "South Devon" milk, for which a higher minimum percentage
(viz., 4 per cent.) of milk fat content is provided for under arrangements
made between the producers and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries
and Food. All of these samples were reported to be in conformity
with this standard, their average composition being : —
Milk fat 4.58 per cent.
Non-fatty solids 8.98
Total milk solids 13.56

The milk fat content of the 18 samples of "Channel Islands" or "South Devon" milk ranged as under: —

between 4.8 and 4.9 per cent.2 samples.
