There were 25 deaths of infants during the first four weeks of
life (or 53.2 per cent. of the total infant deaths) as compared with
30 deaths (or 66.7 per cent.) in 1962 and a percentage for the
quinquennium of 1958-1962 of 70.9.

Deaths of Illegitimate Infants
The death rate amongst illegitimate children during 1963 was
-2.15 per 1,000 illegitimate live births, as compared with 32.45 in
1962. The corresponding death rate of legitimate children in 1963 was
19.56, the ratio of mortality rate of illegitimate infants to that of
legitimate being 113 to 100. The corresponding figure for 1962 was
176 to 100.
Maternal Mortality.
There was one death from "diseases or accidents of child-birth"
during 1963, which is equivalent to a fatality rate of 0.42 per 1,000
births (live and still). This was due to septic abortion.
The rate for England and Wales in 1963 was 0.28.
