Table 5b shows that measles caused 89 deaths, compared to 130, 217 and 86 in
the three previous years; that whooping cough resulted in 122 deaths, as against
121, 86 and 111; and that diarrhœa and dysentery gave rise to 262 deaths, the
numbers in 1896, 1895 and 1894 having been 217, 218 and 105.

Phthisis.—This disease, the type of the tubercular group of diseases, was the cause of 486 deaths, compared to 468 in 1896, 431 in 1895, and 457 in the year previous to that. The incidence of this disease in the Sub-Districts was as follows:—
