COLD STORES.— So far as I am aware, the number of cold stores in the United
Kingdom is as follows:—
In London. In the Provinces.
No. Capacity. No. Capacity.
*33 13,363,000 cubic feet 69 20,902,000 cubic feet
Under construction 78,000 „ ,, Under construction 980,000 „ „
* 15 in the City area with a capacity of 25,000 tons.
In addition, there is a large number of cold stores throughout the country, with
a capacity of less than 100,000 cubic feet, not included in the above.
In will be observed that the quantity of unsound food taken out of the cold stores
is much greater than in 1919. This is accounted for by the clearance of stocks which
had accumulated during the War, and which the owners, store proprietors and
Inspectors could not examine, due to the "ship style" of storing. Much of the
meat &c., was found unwholesome, due to moulds associated with decomposition.
