RHODESIA.
The figures given are : cattle 1,331,284, and in South-West Africa 300,000.
ARGENTINE REPUBLIC.
The estimate numbers of cattle, sheep and pigs are 30,000,000, 60,000,000 and
4,500,000 respectively, as compared with 29,000,000, 55,000,000 and 2,900,000 in 1919.
In the Province of Buenos Aires alone the number of sheep shows an increase of 2,864,000
in four years.
URUGUAY.
The latest figures given (in 1916) are: cattle 7,802,000 and sheep 11,473,000, but there
is said to be a considerable increase since that year.
There are three large freezing works, capable of turning out 1,000 tons per day.
BRAZIL.
The number of cattle in Brazil is estimated to be 30,705,400, and the sheep 10,549,930.
In the region of Rio Grande the prospects are said to be good, and we may expect
considerable quantities of good beef from there.
The number of freezing works in Brazil is now increased to ten, with a killing capacity of
6,000 cattle per day.
PATAGONIA.
The number of sheep is not available, but the shipments during 1920 were the heaviest on
record, amounting to 26,060 tons, compared with 18,295 tons in 1919.
UNITED STATES.
The latest estimate of live stock shows a decrease in both cattle and sheep. The figures
given are: 66,191,000 cattle and 45,067,000 sheep.
Only 11,642 tons of meat were landed here from the United States of America, against that
we observe 44,000 tons of mutton and lamb were imported into the United States from New
Zealand and 7,853 tons from the River Plate, so that we need not consider the United States
of America a source of supply, although at present we are receiving a considerable number of
frozen pig carcases, and it is proposed to re-open the exportation of live cattle to Britain.

TUBERCULOSIS.— There is a considerable decrease in the amount of meat and
offal seized under this heading. The decrease is apparently due to doubtful carcases
which, under "Control," were sent to the Markets for decision as to their fitness
for human food, being sent elsewhere.
