During the year, including a few eases during December, 1917, 59 cases
were dealt with as follows :—
Maternity and illness connected with maternity 22
Consumption 5
Other illnesses 21
Taking children to hospital 4
Not dealt with beyond an initial visit 7
Three home helps were regularly employed, and one other occasionally.
In most cases, either no payments or nominal payments only were received,
but in certain of the maternity cases, the home help was employed full-time in
connection with the confinement and lying-in, and substantial payments were
made by the women for the service. In these cases a system of paying in
advance by small instalments was adopted.
Home Nursury.—A large amount of this, including the nursing of mothers
and children, is done by the four local district nursing associations, supported
by voluntary subscriptions. The work done in cases of measles, whooping
cough, and ophthalmia neonatorum on behalf of the Mayoress of St. Pancras
Nursing Fund for Sick Poor Children is referred to on pages 28, 38 and 45.
The Maternity Nursing Association, 79, Oakley Square, undertakes
"monthly nursing" as well as supplying midwives.
Day Nursrries.—There are four day nurseries in St. Pancras, viz.: The St.
Pancras (''Edith Rendel"), 26, Cartwright Gardens; The Whitefields, 53,
Whitfield Street; The Kentish Town, 27, Gospel Oak Grove ; and the Margaret,
44, Ampthill Square. These have accommodation for 145 children.
The St. Pancras School for Mothers have also a day nursery for their own
ailing children.
Hospital Accommodation.—There is a considerable amount of accommodation
for sick children, and women suffering from diseases of pregnancy and parturition,
in the various hospitals in St. Pancras and the neighbouring parts of
London, in addition to the poor law infirmaries.
