In the Table on page 56 the birth-rates of Hampstead may be
compared with those of England and Wales since 1891.
Illegitimate Births.
Forty-four of the 799 births registered in the Borough were of
illegitimate children.
Of the total 895 births belonging to Hampstead, 98 or 109 per 1,000
births registered were those of illegitimate children. 52 of these were
born outside the Borough, chiefly in Lying-in Institutions. The rate
per 1000 births in 1917 was 63.2.
This subject is also referred to in the Section relating to Maternity
and Child Welfare.
DEATHS.
The recorded death rate is the rate obtained by calculating the
number of "nett" deaths per 1000 of the population. From the total
deaths of civilians registered is deducted the number who were nonresident
persons, and, after subtracting these, the number of deaths of
Hampstead residents who died outside the Borough is added. The total
nett deaths during 1918 was 1,027, or 14.3 per 1000 of the population,
as compared with 10.8 in the preceding year. One of the deaths
registered during the year was uncertified. This is the highest death
rate recorded since 1878, when the rate was 14.8.
