In doubtful cases the Council undertake to arrange for the bacteriological examination of
material taken from the throats of suspects free of charge ; the number of examinations made at the
Council's expense has amounted to 30 in 12 months. An arrangement has been come to with the
Medical Officer (Education) of the London County Council, whereby all children excluded from
school by the head teachers for suspicious sore throats are now notified to the Medical Officer of
Health of the district in which the school is situated. The children excluded are visited and are
not re-admitted to school except with a medical certificate stating that they may return without
danger to their school fellows. Co-operation on these lines between the Education and Sanitary
authorities should do much to diminish the prevalence of Scarlet Fever and Diphtheria.
SCARLET FEVER.
During the year 417 cases of Scarlet Fever were notified, and of these only 9 proved fatal.
As will be seen from the following table a marked increase in the prevalence of the disease occurred
both in Kensington and London during the months of October and November.
