A glance at the above table shows that of the total number
of infant deaths from this cause, 24 (i.e., 57 per cent.) were
between three and nine months old.
Only five of the 42 infants were entirely breast fed.
Tuberculosis.
During 1909, 289 deaths from tuberculosis were registered
in the Borough of Battersea. Of this number 217 (i.e., 75 per
cent.) were due to phthisis (tuberculosis of the lungs), 33 to
tubercular meningitis, 17 to general tuberculosis, 2 to tubercular
disease of the larynx, 8 to tuberculosis of the intestines, and 12 to
other forms of the disease. In 1908 the total number of deaths
from tuberculosis was 306; in 1907, 304.
