Report on the health of the Metropolitan Borough of Battersea for the year 1909

Fifteen of these deaths were registered as being due to epidemic
or zymotic enteritis. The death-rate was .28 per 1,000, or .45
below the decennial average, .73. Of the 53 deaths, 51 (i.e., 96
per cent.) were of children under five years of age, and 42 (i.e.,
79 per cent.) of infants under one year of age. During 1908, 89
deaths from diarrhœa were registered, of which 72 (i.e., 80 per
cent.) were of infants under one year.

The number of deaths and the death-rate in the sub-districts in 1907, 1908 and 1909 were as follows:—

Of the 42 deaths of infants under one year from diarrhœa or
epidemic enteritis, 22 occurred in the third quarter of the year, distributed
as follows in the three sub-districts: East Battersea, 17;
North-West Battersea, 8; South-West Battersea, 2.
