whole year 1910, I may here record the results obtained. During
this period I received 5,464 notifications of birth occurring in
Hackney. This includes notification from all sources and also still
births. This is equal to 99.5 per cent. of the number registered in
the Borough. This result is most satisfactory. I give here a table
showing the number of notifications of birth received and giving
other details in connection with such notifications.
Amongst the births notified, 142 were still-born. This is
equivalent to 2 6 per cent, of the total notified.

Illegitimate Births and Birth-rate.—The total number of illegitimate
births registered in the Borough of Hackney during the year
1910 was 372, but of these 243 occurred in the Salvation Army
Rescue Home, Mare Street, the mothers of 236 being drawn from
places outside of Hackney. Also 17 illegitimate births took place
in the Hackney Union Infirmary—the mothers belonging to other
districts. Deducting these 253 from the total there remain 119
amongst the population of Hackney during 1910. This is equal to
an illegitimate birth-rate of 21 per 1,000 births.
The following table gives the birth-rates, &c., for the subdistricts
in the Borough : —
