The above figures relating to the general death-rate, Infant
Mortality rate and the Zymotic death-rate show a very substantial
and gratifying improvement in the Public Health of the Borough
during the year 1910. In the consideration of the health conditions
of the Borough it must be borne in mind, that the character of the
Borough is gradually changing from a suburban residential to that
of an industrial district. In my report for 1909, I stated that there
were in the Borough, at the end of that year, 438 factories, 1,311
workshops and 3,263 out-workers. At the end of 1910 these figures
had changed to 444 factories, 1,321 workshops and 3,164 out-workers.
It is satisfactory to find that, in spite of increasing density and the
gradual change from suburban to industrial conditions, the health
of the Borough continues to improve.
The following table shows the Density of Population, Annual Mortality from all causes and Infant Mortality in the Borough of Hackney, during the 12 years ending 1910.
