Report on the sanitary condition of the Hackney District for the year 1910

The following table shows the distribution of the cases of this disease in the different sub-districts of the Borough during 1910:—

From the above it will be noted that this disease was most
prevalent during 1910 in the North sub-district (.93 per 1,000), and
least prevalent (.62 per 1,000) in the Central sub-district. The
deaths from diphtheria and membranous croup during the year
numbered eight. This is equal to a mortality rate of 42 per 1,000
ateacked, and .03 per 1,000 living. The death-rate from diphtheria
for London during the same period was .09 per 1,000 living. During
the year, 167 swabbings from throats of persons suspected to be
suffering from diphtheria were bacteriologically examined, 51
of which gave positive and 111 negative results, and 5 were
doubtful.
DIPHTHERIA ANTI TOXIN.
On the 10th August, 1910, the Local Government Board issued
an order to Local Authorities in London, which gave them the power
to provide, in pursuance of Sec. 77 of the Public Health (London)
Act, 1891, a temporary supply of diphtheria anti-toxin and of
medical assistance in connection with the same for the poorer
inhabitants of their districts, subject to the conditions that:—
"1. The arrangements with respect to the keeping, distribution,
and use of the diphtheria antitoxin shall be made in
accordance with the advice of the Medical Officer of Health."
