of disposal of sputum, and in the general hygienic
regulation of his life in a practical manner hardly
possible at home. The memorandum continues :—
" From the standpoint of the sanitary authority a
" much larger number of patients can in this way
" be treated and prevented from becoming a source
" of infection than if permanent cure of the indivi"
dual patient were made the only consideration."
Enquiries were made with regard to the Maitland
Sanatorium, Peppard Common, Oxon; Fairlight
Sanatorium, Hastings, and the National
Sanatorium, Benenden, Kent.

The cost of maintenance at these Institutions is quoted as follows :—

1. Maitland Sanatorium£78 per bed per annum
2. Fairlightdo.£50do.do.
3. Nationaldo.£78do.do.

From further information obtained as to Fairlight
Sanatorium, the treatment there, in the
opinion of the Medical Officer of Health, appears
to be established on a very satisfactory basis, and
this Institution would appear to be well suited to
the needs of patients from this Borough.
Sanatorium treatment would, of course, be
confined to persons whose symptoms indicated that
they would derive benefit from the treatment, that
is to say, those in the early stages of the disease.
