These samples are purchased privately, and
submitted for examination, and in the case of any
proving unsatisfactory the vendor is kept under
observation.
The samples of mussels mentioned were purchased
in connection with the outbreak of enteric
fever, an account of which appears in the report of
the Medical Officer of Health; the one adversely
reported upon showed evidence of sewage contamination.
The authorities in the City of London were
thereupon communicated with for the purpose of
dealing with the wholesale dealer in Bishopsgate Market.
The samples of Margarine and Lard were
purchased in consequence of a circular letter from the
Board of Agriculture on the subject of alleged complaints
which had been received by the Board to an
extensive trade in lard substitutes and the fraudulent
sale of margarine.
Four samples of Tea sold as China were kindly
examined free of charge by Messrs. C. Hope & Sons,
Tea Experts, of Eastcheap, E.C., who reported them
to be all as sold with the exception of one, a blend
of Indian and Ceylon.
