Diphtheria and Membranous Croup.
The number of cases notified in 1909 was 33, as compared with
55 in 1908, the attack-rate, or number of cases notified per 1000
population, being 0.35. The number of fatal cases was 5, or 15.1 per
cent. of the cases notified. The death-rate per 1000 population was
0.05; 16 patients, or 48 per cent. of the total cases notified, were
removed to hospital.
A thorough examination was made of the sanitary condition of
every house in which a case of diphtheria occurred, and the following
defects were discovered:—
Drains defective 13
Soil pipes defective 4
Water supplies defective 5
Other defects 14
