POPULATION.
The population of Hampstead at the middle of 1908 was
estimated by the Registrar-General to be 92,654.
The Registrar-General's estimate has been adopted in this
report, and it forms the basis upon which the various rates have
been calculated. It is arrived at by assuming that since the last
census the population has increased at the same rate as in the last
inter-censal period.

The following is an approximate estimate of the population of the various Wards of the Borough:—

The area of the Borough (including the area, twelve acres in
extent, covered by water), is 2,265 acres, and the estimated number
of persons to the acre is 40.9. The proportion of persons to the
acre at the Census, 1901, was 36.17.
At the Census of 1881 the number of persons per acre was 23;
and in 1891 it was 30.

MARRIAGES. According to the returns of the Registrar-General, 622 marriages were registered in the Borough during 1908; they were distributed in the four quarters of the year as follows:—
