MORTALITY IN THE SUB-REGISTRATION DISTRICTS.
Of the 5,721 deaths that occurred in the Borough 1,635 occurred in Upper
Holloway, 738 in Lower Holloway, 932 in Highbury, 1,004 in Barnsbury and
1,412 in Islington South East.
Upper Holloway.
There were 1,635 deaths registered, of which 842 were those of males and 793
females; and they were equal to an annual death-rate of 15.50 per 1,000 inhabitants.
The death-rate in the preceding nine years averaged 17.6 per 1,000. The
return must, therefore, be considered very good.

This district has invariably since 1893 had a good repute, as may be seen by the following statistics:—

Years.Deaths.Death-rate.
18912,176= 24.01 per 1,000 inhabitants.
18922,158= 23.40 „ „
18931,702= 18.14 „ „
18941,458= 15.30 „ „
18951.564= 16.12 „ „
18961,603= 15.93 „ „
18971,481= 14.75 „ „
18981.530= 15,00 „ „

A detailed statement of the causes of death are given in Table D in the
Appendix.
Lower Holloway.
738 deaths were registered, 380 being of males and 358 of females. These
represented a death-rate of 17.35 per 1,000 of its population. As this is a new
sub-registration district it is impossible to compare the present return with those
of preceding years.
A full statement of the various causes of death are given in the Appendix
(Table D).
